Well, it’s been summer for quite some time now – especially in Arizona – we’ve been hitting over 100 since May! The sweltering heat gets us in the mood for grilling on the patio. I had some tofu steaks on hand and Nick had just picked up his meat selection from some Groupon deal he bought awhile ago. Even though I don’t eat meat, I must say his steak choices were gorgeous and had perfect marbling. So perfect, that he didn’t even mess with it before putting it on the grill – just a dash of salt and pepper and he was good to go.
I had a hankering for something spicy and tangy – I think you see where I’m heading. Frank’s Red Hot “Buffalo” style sauce. The great thing about tofu is that it can pick up marinade flavors really well and in a very short amount of time. I just marinated the tofu for about 20 minutes, tossed it on the grill with Nick’s steak and let the grill do it’s thing. I served my tofu with a quick Garlicky-Lime Aioli; it was a nice cooling element with the spiciness.
Here’s a a picture of Nick with his prized steak:
Here is my recipe:
Buffalo Tofu Steaks
Ingredients:
- 1 16-ounce block of extra-firm tofu
- 1 teaspoon olive oil
- 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
- 1/4 teaspoon paprika
- 1/4 cup Frank’s Red Hot Buffalo Sauce
- 1/8 cup Earth Balance Soy-Free Butter, melted
The Method:
- In a bowl, combine the oil, salt, paprika, hot sauce and melted butter.
- Cut the tofu into steaks and gently toss to coat with the mixture. Let the steaks sit in the mixture for 20 minutes before grilling.
- Place each tofu steak in a single layer on the grill. Grill for 5 minutes on each side. (Nick’s steak needed to be cooked for 6 minutes on each side, so we timed it accordingly)
Garlicky-Lime Aioli:
Ingredients:
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon grated lime rind
- 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
- 1 garlic clove, minced
- pinch of paprika
- pinch of salt
- pinch of pepper
The Method:
Combine all ingredients in a small bowl. Mix and serve.
It was so yummy that even my well-mannered pit bull, Eleanor was begging for table scraps:
Thanks for this cool recipe!!! (my husband like this steak…mens!)
Tofu is magical, it is such a great protein and accompaniment or main since it picks up flavours so easily.
Agreed!
Looks great! I can’t wait to make this,
my mouth is watering…………you make dishes look soooo good!! would you like to ship some to pennsylvania! LOL
Haha! That is too kind! But I am a very visual eater, so if it looks good then it tastes good!!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the tofu idea! Here is one of my tasty grilling ideas……cut avocado in half…..remove pit…leave skin on!……..s&p, onion power, dash garlic powder……..brush with olive oil…..grill face down……remove after a quick flash of heat………. spoon in some corn salsa in the little cup where the pit was removed. The entire dish screams I’m cute, unlike my ugly cousin guacamole.
Oh. My. Goodness. That sounds absolutely fabulous! Nick and I will have to try that next. We have A LOT of grilling to do! 🙂 Say, we should have a BBQing date with you and Tim soon!!
Plus, how cute would that photograph be?
YES! Isn’t it all about the photograph anyway? Lets do it soon, I’m hungry.
Well I know that the buffalo tofu must have been tasty because for your dog to beg for scraps, he must have known you were onto a good thing! 😉
She usually never begs, too! She’ll just lay down under the table and wait until Nick and I are done with our food. And sometimes we let her lick the plate. But this time, she couldn’t restrain herself!
Omigosh you are a life or should I say stomach saver ❤
Haha thank you! I must say, I was too sure how this recipe would turn out at first… but I was VERY pleased with it in the end.
This looks great! If I use a vegan mayo then the whole thing is easily made vegan – very exciting.
Absolutely! I usually have vegan mayo at home but I was at the boyfriend’s house and he’s only got the real stuff :). Honestly, I can’t even taste the difference but I’m a Vegenaise girl for sure!
What a great recipe – totally trying to get away from my usual tofu stir-fry!
Oh yes, gotta love a good stir-fry – but I have definitely been in the “stir-fry rut” before haha
Your grill tofu steak looks so yummy yet healthy. Thanks for sharing.
Oh it was!! You should definitely try it out. May even be good baked, too!
I was just racking my brain for vegetarian ideas for this week. My husband agrees we should eat vegetarian more often but he’s not thrilled with the idea. So I’ll lure him over by adding some blue cheese crumbles- what man can resist Buffalo wings? By the way, I also LOVE aioli!
Love the idea!
Fabulous! My meat-eating boyfriend liked the tofu, so hopefully your husband finds it delicious as well 🙂
